Uruguay’s Ministry of Public Health (MSP) is proposing an expansion of medical residency positions throughout the country, aiming to address a significant imbalance in specialist training opportunities. Currently, 85% of medical residents train in Montevideo, leaving limited opportunities in other departments. A recent Public Health report revealed that six departments currently have no specialist training positions available. The MSP highlights a marked inequality in the distribution of various medical specialties nationwide. This initiative seeks to decentralize medical education and improve healthcare access in underserved areas. The plan intends to encourage more doctors to practice outside the capital, potentially alleviating strain on Montevideo’s healthcare system and improving regional medical capabilities. The move is presented as a crucial step towards equitable healthcare provision across Uruguay.
