The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is advocating for the implementation of sanitary pad banks in Nigerian schools. This initiative aims to address “period poverty,” the struggle many girls face in accessing menstrual products, which often leads to school absenteeism. Dr. Zubaida Abubakar, UNFPA Gender/GBV Management Specialist, highlighted this issue during the Nigeria Menstrual Health Product Forum in Lagos. By providing free and accessible sanitary products, the UNFPA hopes to ensure girls do not miss classes or examinations due to menstruation. The call underscores the importance of menstrual health management for educational equity. This measure seeks to empower girls and support their continued education without interruption. The UNFPA believes access to these essential products is a fundamental right, not a privilege.
