The United Nations General Assembly is set to vote on a resolution to replace the commonly used Mercator map with one that accurately depicts the true scale of Africa. Currently, the Mercator projection drastically underestimates Africa’s size, often portraying it as comparable to Greenland. The resolution, sponsored by Togo, aims to correct this longstanding geographical misrepresentation. Togo’s foreign affairs minister, Robert Dussey, stated the initiative has support from the African Union and its 54 member states. This shift would address a historical distortion that has shaped perceptions of the continent’s size and importance. The vote on Friday could signify a move towards more accurate and equitable global representations. Adoption of the new map would mean a phased removal of the Mercator projection from official UN materials.
