Ulaanbaatar’s planned tram system, intended to alleviate traffic congestion as part of a larger city development project, has been indefinitely suspended. The project, initiated under a previous mayor, involved two lines with a total estimated cost of 2.7 trillion Mongolian togrog (approximately $800 million USD). A tender for the second line, using an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) model, was announced in March 2024 but faced delays due to requests for extensions from potential bidders. Recent discussions at a city council meeting revealed the tender process has now stopped. City officials state the project wasn’t halted by direct decision, but due to the failure to complete the selection process by a legal deadline, resulting in the reallocation of the allocated budget of 310 billion togrog ($88 million USD). Concerns have been raised about wasted funds already spent on preliminary work and design.
