Ulaanbaatar city authorities have announced plans to construct 73.2 kilometers of dedicated bicycle lanes across five districts – Songinokhairkhan, Bayangol, Chingeltei, Sukhbaatar, and Bayanzurkh – with completion targeted for summer 2026. The project aims to address a growing safety concern stemming from increased scooter and moped use coupled with a lack of designated pathways. Official data reveals a significant rise in pedestrian accidents, jumping from 532 incidents in 2024 to 2,792 in 2025, largely occurring on sidewalks. City officials believe dedicated bike lanes are the most effective solution to mitigate these risks and improve road safety for all. The new network will connect the specified districts, providing a safer alternative for cyclists and pedestrians. The initiative is being spearheaded by the National Agency for Transportation Development and Management (NЗДТГ). This infrastructure development responds to a critical need for safer non-motorized transport options within the capital city.
