A recent audit reveals that the Ulaanbaatar city government allocated 3.006 billion Mongolian Tugrik (₮) to 306 media contracts between 2024 and 2025. The Capital City Governor's Office accounted for approximately 40% of this spending. The Mongolian Youth Alliance NGO presented findings suggesting a pattern of numerous small-value contracts, potentially influencing media independence. The largest contracts were awarded to companies like "Dens Media" (₮30 million) and "Mongolian Electric News" (₮29 million). Contracts were distributed among 93 LLCs, 30 NGOs, 3 television stations, and 1 newspaper, as well as individual contractors. The audit highlighted concerns that this fragmented approach to contracting could compromise journalistic objectivity and create undue influence. The City Council alone spent ₮1.4 billion on contracts, while districts allocated ₮1.7 billion.
