Olexandre Tchoumak’s war against Russia began in 2014 when he voluntarily enlisted in the army. He fought in Debaltseve, in the Donetsk region, where a tank struck the building where he was sheltering. He recounts being pulled from a shaft by his comrades, questioning if their rescue attempt was wise, given the risk to their own lives. Tchoumak recovered relatively quickly and returned to service. The experience highlights the difficult realities faced by Ukrainian soldiers and the sacrifices made during the conflict. His story is one of both courage and reflection on the harsh realities of war, and adapting to life with significant injuries. He continues to support the war effort despite his challenges.
