European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas acknowledged that Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network is “really indispensable” for Kyiv during ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This statement comes amid complaints from the Ukrainian military regarding restrictions imposed on the Starlink service, which they consider crucial for their operations. Kallas highlighted that the EU currently lacks the capacity to immediately replace Starlink’s functionality. The reliance on Starlink underscores the importance of satellite internet in modern warfare, particularly in situations where terrestrial infrastructure is damaged or unavailable. Ukrainian forces depend on Starlink for vital communication and intelligence gathering. The EU recognizes the need to develop independent capabilities in this domain but conceded a short-term substitute is not feasible. This dependence highlights ongoing discussions regarding the role of private companies in supporting national security interests in Ukraine.
