Ukraine has resumed attacks on Russian energy facilities following a three-day pause, as announced by President Zelensky in an interview with the Financial Times. Zelensky stated he authorized the resumption of strikes because Russia did not adhere to the proposed ceasefire. The ceasefire, unilaterally announced by the American president, aimed for both Russia and Ukraine to spare each other’s energy sectors, but Zelensky was not consulted beforehand. Despite initial agreement contingent on Russian compliance, attacks continued during the pause, particularly targeting critical energy infrastructure in Kyiv. Zelensky questioned how long Ukraine could delay retaliatory strikes on Russian refineries given the continued attacks. He also noted he had not yet discussed the decision with President Trump.
