British Prime Minister Burnham has informed Parliament that Iran is “highly likely” responsible for a security incident at the Royal Air Force base in Fairford late last month, asserting the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRG) were “almost certainly” behind it. The incident triggered a major alert when suspicious white vans were spotted near the base, prompting a counter-terrorism investigation and the evacuation of nearby homes. While the vans were found to contain only gasoline canisters, five men were initially arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act, with two more later detained – all have since been released under conditions. The US, which maintains a significant military presence at the Fairford base used for bombing missions against Iran, and other allies have condemned Iran’s actions. In response, the UK will impose further sanctions on Iran, and the Foreign Secretary Miliband summoned the Iranian ambassador to condemn threats on British soil. Iran denies any involvement, but the UK views Iran’s attempts to undermine its security as “unacceptable.”
