Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service in Northern England is trialing AI-powered drone swarms to proactively detect and suppress wildfires, a growing concern due to increasingly hot and dry conditions. Inspired by flocking bird behavior, these drones communicate and cooperate without central control, autonomously identifying and responding to fires. Equipped with sensors, the drones can locate fires, assess the situation, and even suggest actions to firefighters monitoring remotely. Researchers from the University of Bristol are collaborating on the project, emphasizing the technology’s ability to share information and operate collectively.
