The United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) has approved teplizumab, a groundbreaking medication representing the first treatment globally designed to delay the onset of type 1 diabetes. The drug has demonstrated the ability to postpone the disease’s development by up to three years in at-risk individuals. This approval offers a significant advancement in managing type 1 diabetes, providing a potential window of opportunity to delay the need for insulin therapy. Teplizumab is intended for use in individuals recently diagnosed with stage 3 autoimmune diabetes, before symptoms become clinically apparent. The NHS estimates that approximately 200 people per year will initially be eligible for the treatment. This decision marks a major step forward in proactive diabetes care within the UK’s healthcare system.
