The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) in Uganda is experiencing a significant crisis, impacting its ability to deliver essential services. Currently, NIRA is holding approximately 5.4 million newly printed national identity cards awaiting collection by citizens. This substantial backlog was revealed to Parliament on Monday and poses a threat to individuals’ access to crucial services, including banking. The situation stems from a staffing crisis within NIRA, hindering their capacity to efficiently distribute the identification documents. The uncollected IDs represent a significant number of Ugandan citizens potentially facing difficulties accessing essential resources. Authorities are now grappling with how to address the backlog and improve service delivery amidst the staffing challenges. This issue highlights a critical gap in ensuring all Ugandans have access to necessary identification.
