Uganda is experiencing a surge in “digital work” facilitated by smartphone platforms, connecting thousands to income opportunities. This new workforce includes boda-boda riders, delivery personnel, freelancers, and online traders. While these platforms offer unprecedented access to jobs, they currently operate largely outside of traditional labor regulations. Experts are urging the Ugandan government to proactively address the rights and protections of these digital workers. The lack of legal frameworks leaves workers vulnerable regarding fair wages, safe working conditions, and social security. This growing sector demands immediate attention to ensure equitable treatment and sustainable livelihoods for its participants. Failure to act risks exploitation and instability within this rapidly expanding part of the Ugandan economy.
