As Uganda celebrates 64 years of independence, its cotton industry faces significant challenges. Once a leading cash crop, cotton production in Uganda has drastically declined since its peak in 1972, falling from 78,000 tonnes to a mere 2,000 tonnes in 1987. This decline continued to 14,000 tonnes in 1976 before hitting its lowest point. Consequently, export earnings from cotton have also fallen substantially, failing to reach previous levels. The situation highlights a struggle to revitalize a traditionally important sector of Uganda’s economy. This analysis, reported by URN and published in The Independent Uganda, examines the state of cotton farming in the country and its diminished role in the national economy. The future of cotton in Uganda remains uncertain as the nation navigates economic development.
