Ugandan lawyer Male Mabirizi has been granted mandatory bail by the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s court after spending over 60 days in remand without a trial. Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe Kidasa ruled in his favour, citing a violation of his constitutional right to a timely trial. The constitution stipulates a maximum of 60 days of pre-trial detention. Mabirizi was ordered to pay a cash bail of 2 million Ugandan Shillings to secure his release. This case highlights concerns regarding pre-trial detention periods in Uganda and the upholding of constitutional rights. The ruling emphasizes the importance of adhering to legally prescribed timelines for commencing trials. Mabirizi’s release follows a period of legal contention regarding his prolonged detention.
