The Ugandan Army’s Fourth Infantry Division distributed over 800 bags of illegally sourced charcoal to residents of Nwoya district. The charcoal, previously impounded from dealers transporting it through northern Uganda, was given to communities in Agung village and Anaka Town Council. The distribution was ordered by Maj Gen Felix, commander of the Fourth Infantry Division. This action aims to provide a resource to local residents while simultaneously addressing the issue of illegal charcoal trade. While the distribution provides immediate benefit, the underlying problem of deforestation and illegal logging remains. The move represents a unique approach to dealing with confiscated contraband, opting for community support instead of destruction or resale. Further action is expected to address the source of the illegal charcoal trade.
