Communities in Uganda’s Buliisa district, like Bugana village, are facing increasing anxiety over land ownership following the discovery of oil reserves. Residents, such as Moses K. Asaba, express fears of displacement from their ancestral lands, jeopardizing their livelihoods and heritage. The oil discovery has created uncertainty regarding the future of these communities and their long-held claims to the land. While the oil promises economic benefits for the nation, locals worry these will come at the cost of their homes and way of life. The lack of clarity surrounding land rights exacerbates the problem, leaving families unsure if they can remain on the land they’ve occupied for generations. This situation highlights a growing conflict between resource extraction and the rights of indigenous populations in Uganda.
