Uganda has initiated a nationwide Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) mass vaccination campaign, representing a significant change in its approach to animal health management. The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) is leading the effort, beginning with sensitization in districts like Kitgum. This new strategy moves away from responding to outbreaks and towards preventative, nationwide vaccination. However, the mandatory nature of the vaccination has sparked controversy due to the introduction of new fees for farmers. Details regarding the fee structure and its impact on farmers are currently under discussion. The program aims to protect livestock and prevent economic losses caused by FMD outbreaks. This marks a proactive step in safeguarding Uganda’s animal resources and agricultural sector.
