A prolonged dry spell has devastated the first major wheat crop in Uganda’s Karamoja sub-region, causing significant losses for over 40 farmers. More than 200 acres of wheat were destroyed, wiping out the region’s initial attempt at large-scale wheat cultivation. The project, recently introduced by the government through the Karamoja Mixed Farmers cooperative, aimed to diversify crops and improve food security. Farmers are now facing considerable financial hardship due to the crop failure. This disaster highlights the vulnerability of agriculture in Karamoja to climate change and the urgent need for drought-resistant farming strategies. The situation underscores the challenges of establishing new crops in arid environments without reliable irrigation. Further support will be needed to help these farmers recover and potentially re-establish wheat farming in the future.
