A researcher at Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) in Mozambique, Vali Issufo, has championed the development of artificial intelligence (AI) specifically adapted to the practical conditions of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). Issufo argues that current AI models often fail to address the unique challenges and contexts present in these nations. He stresses the necessity for AI solutions grounded in local data and responsive to specific regional needs, moving away from a “one-size-fits-all” approach. This localized AI, he believes, has the potential to drive innovation and progress across critical sectors within the CPLP. The call for tailored AI highlights the importance of indigenous expertise and data sovereignty in technological development. Ultimately, Issufo envisions AI serving as a vital tool for sustainable development and problem-solving within the CPLP member states.
