A new HIV prevention drug, Lenacapavir, is slated for large-scale distribution across Southern Africa. Approved after extensive research and trials, the medication offers over 99% protection against the virus. The rollout will focus on six countries particularly affected by HIV/AIDS: South Africa, Zambia, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and Mozambique. Lenacapavir distinguishes itself with its infrequent dosage schedule – administered only twice per year. This novel approach aims to improve adherence and accessibility to preventative treatment. Health officials anticipate a significant impact on reducing new HIV infections in the region. Reports from the field indicate preparations are underway for the mass campaigns.
