Tieme Heeringa, a 20-year-old law student, has been appointed as an alderman in the Dutch municipality of Dantumadiel, making him the youngest-ever to hold the position in the Netherlands. Heeringa’s political career began with a petition for school renovations in 2022, leading to his involvement with the Fryske Nasjonale Partij. He previously campaigned for the party in the 2025 national elections and became a list leader for the local council elections at age 19. His portfolio will include education, culture, and youth affairs. The Wethoudersvereniging (Aldermen’s Association) expressed enthusiasm, noting the value of diverse perspectives in local government. Heeringa believes his age will be an asset, allowing him to better represent the interests of young people and increase their engagement in politics. He anticipates a collaborative relationship with more experienced colleagues, bringing a fresh perspective to the council.
