Turkey’s Human Rights and Equality Institution (TİHEK) has issued a fine of 256,357 lira (approximately $5,300) to Meta, the parent company of Instagram. The penalty results from TİHEK’s finding that Instagram removed posts expressing support for Palestine and restricted a user’s ability to livestream. The decision follows a complaint filed by Turkish TV host and writer İkbal Gürpınar, who brought attention to the content moderation practices. TİHEK determined that Instagram’s actions constituted a violation of freedom of expression. This ruling highlights growing concerns regarding social media censorship and the handling of political content on these platforms. The fine reflects Turkey’s scrutiny of tech companies and their content policies, particularly concerning sensitive geopolitical issues. This case adds to a wider debate about balancing free speech with platform responsibility.
