The Tunisian Association of Taxonomy (Atutax) initiated a project in Djerba to locate and remove abandoned fishing gear from the seabed. As part of the ECO-GEAR project, the team successfully extracted nets, ropes, and hooks during their first mission. This operation involved close collaboration with local civil society organizations and experts. The removed gear, often referred to as "ghost fishing" equipment, poses a significant threat to marine life and ecosystems. The initiative aims to mitigate the harmful effects of this debris.
