Tunisia’s religious authority has increased the threshold for Zakat El Maal, a form of Islamic almsgiving, to 34,369.356 Tunisian dinars for the year 1448 of the Islamic calendar. This figure represents the minimum wealth required for Muslims to pay the religious levy. The increase reflects a significant rise in gold prices over the past three years, as the threshold is calculated based on the value of 85 grams of gold. Authorities state the Nissab, as the threshold is known, has more than doubled in the last three years. Zakat El Maal is a mandatory charitable contribution for wealthy Muslims, used to support those in need. The decision was made by the Mufti of the Republic, Hichem Ben Mahmoud. This adjustment ensures the alms remain aligned with current economic realities and the value of gold.
