A road in Hyderabad, India, has been renamed “Donald Trump Avenue,” prompting criticism from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The move, enacted by the opposition Congress party which governs Telangana state, is seen as hypocritical given strained US-India relations during Trump’s presidency. Ties have been challenged by US tariffs, sanctions related to Indian oil purchases from Russia, and closer US engagement with Pakistan. The road’s location near the US consulate and major tech company offices adds to the controversy. The BJP accuses Congress of inconsistency, questioning why they would honor Trump while criticizing Prime Minister Modi’s handling of US-India disputes. Other political parties have also condemned the renaming, while Congress defends it as a symbol of Hyderabad’s growing US partnership. Trump himself has not visited Hyderabad, despite previous US presidents doing so.
