The New York Times reports President Trump intends to withdraw a portion of US military aircraft and naval vessels from Europe for deployment elsewhere globally. These planned reductions, shared with European allies earlier this month, include a decrease in available fighter jets from approximately 150 to 100, as well as the removal of maritime reconnaissance and tanker aircraft. A naval aircraft carrier, a missile-capable submarine, accompanying warships, and strategic bombers are also slated for redeployment. The move is expected to diminish NATO’s long-range strike and surveillance capabilities from European bases. This decision aligns with the Trump administration’s ongoing pressure on European nations to increase their defense spending. The US previously announced the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany, continuing a trend of shifting military presence post-World War II. NATO has not yet publicly commented on the reported plans.
