Dozens protested outside Japan’s foreign ministry in Tokyo following the accusation of a US Marine, Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, in the death of Anna Yagi in Okinawa. The 20-year-old Marine is suspected of killing Yagi, 39, in a Naha hotel last weekend and allegedly stole her belongings. The incident has reignited concerns about the presence of US troops in Okinawa, a region with a history of incidents involving American service members. While public reaction has been less intense than in past cases, like the 1995 rape case, the killing has prompted strong condemnation from Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and a formal protest to the US. In response, the US military has temporarily halted operations, banned alcohol, and implemented a month-long curfew for service members in Japan for retraining. Okinawa hosts the majority of the 18,000 US Marines stationed in Japan, a presence which has long been a source of tension with local residents.
