A proposed amendment to Mongolia’s tobacco control law is facing obstruction due to alleged lobbying efforts by major tobacco companies. MP O. Nominchimeg has publicly accused a cross-party group of individuals of working to weaken the legislation in exchange for financial gain. Three major companies – “Altan Gadas”, “Voltam” (cigarette importers), and “Electron Ganjet”, “Tsahiur” (e-cigarette importers) – are implicated in attempting to protect their market share and expand sales. Nominchimeg alleges these companies are influencing lawmakers to stall or dilute the bill, which aims to strengthen public health protections. The tobacco market in Mongolia is estimated at 800 billion MNT, with companies aiming to increase it to 1.5 trillion MNT. Nominchimeg expressed dismay at the reversal of support from parliamentarians who initially signed the bill, and the deliberate obstruction of the legislative process by newly appointed members of working groups. She claims the future health of Mongolian citizens is being compromised for financial interests.
