Indian police detained at least two thousand protestors in Delhi on Saturday, according to international news agencies and local media. The detentions occurred during demonstrations organized by the Shwabhumi People’s Party (CJP), an opposition movement demanding the resignation of Election Commission Chairman Gyanesh Kumar. High-ranking party officials were also among those detained. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has urged India to unconditionally release all those arbitrarily arrested. The protests highlight ongoing political tensions within India. The UN statement emphasized the importance of upholding the right to peaceful assembly. Authorities have not yet responded to the UN’s call for release.
