Thailand has suspended all bilateral discussions with Cambodia, including those concerning border issues, following Cambodia’s invocation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) regarding a maritime boundary dispute. This action comes as both nations have agreed to submit the contentious maritime area to UN arbitration. Thailand has also confirmed it will maintain existing border closures. The dispute centers on overlapping claims in the Gulf of Thailand, potentially involving oil and gas resources. Cambodia initiated the UNCLOS process seeking a resolution through international law. The move effectively pauses broader border negotiations while the maritime issue undergoes international arbitration, signaling a significant escalation in the dispute. Both countries are now awaiting the establishment of an arbitration panel by the United Nations.
