A biology lecturer in Bangkok, Thailand, is advising against a popular method of protecting cars from floodwaters—completely wrapping them in plastic. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jessada Denduangboripant from Chulalongkorn University warns this practice can create a breeding ground for mold inside the vehicle. Prolonged exposure to moisture trapped by the plastic can lead to significant mold growth, damaging the car’s interior. Furthermore, he cautions that the plastic can trap air, potentially causing the vehicle to become buoyant and float away in deep floodwaters. The expert suggests alternative methods to mitigate flood damage are preferable to plastic wrapping. This warning comes as many areas in Thailand face ongoing flooding challenges.
