Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has described the failed execution of Christa Pike as “a tragedy,” halting the procedure after difficulties were encountered during the lethal injection process. Pike was convicted of first-degree murder in the 1991 slayings of Chad and Tonya Burnett in Giles County, Tennessee. Had the execution been successful, she would have been the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than two centuries. The execution was called off after medical personnel were unable to access intravenous lines, and further attempts were deemed unsuccessful. Governor Lee ordered a review of the situation following the unsuccessful attempt to carry out the death sentence in Nashville, Tennessee. Pike’s fate remains uncertain as authorities investigate what went wrong during the attempted execution at the correctional facility in Nashville.
