Christa Pike, a convicted murderer in Tennessee, US, has been discharged from hospital and returned to the Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Centre following a failed execution attempt. The 50-year-old Pike received two doses of pentobarbital on September 30th but surprisingly survived. She was initially transported to hospital in critical condition but has since regained consciousness, though her lawyers describe her as being in a “foggy” mental state. This makes Pike the first inmate to survive a lethal injection, according to the Death Penalty Information Centre. Pike is continuing to receive medical care at the prison, where she has been housed for over three decades. She was sentenced to death in Tennessee for the 1991 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, committed when Pike was 18 years old, and the execution attempt followed extensive legal challenges.
