A 19-year-old woman suffered from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain for two years, stemming from a habit of biting hard objects. The issue began during a barbecue two years prior, and worsened over time. Doctors at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital identified the habit as the primary cause of her discomfort. They cautioned against four specific behaviors which exacerbate TMJ problems: chewing gum, biting nails, clenching the jaw, and grinding teeth. The patient received treatment and advice to break these habits to alleviate the pain and prevent further damage to her jaw joint. Early intervention and habit modification are crucial in managing TMJ disorders, doctors say.
