Initial reports, published on July 29, 1976, indicated this was the strongest earthquake in 12 years to hit the region. The industrial belt was particularly affected, raising concerns about damage to plants and property. The initial tremor was followed by numerous aftershocks, exacerbating the destruction. Notably, a second, almost equally intense aftershock hit the same area 16 hours later, compounding the initial damage. The full extent of the catastrophe, later confirmed to exceed 240,000 deaths, was initially unknown, but immediately anticipated to be severe.
