The Taliban regime in Afghanistan has imposed a ban on smartphones for all government employees, effective June 17th, according to a recent decree issued by supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada. The directive mandates that local officials strictly enforce the ban on their subordinates. This applies to both civilian and military government institutions, with only the supreme leader authorized to grant exemptions. Implementation began in provinces like Ghazni, where officials have switched to phone calls and email for communication, facing potential job loss or criminal charges for non-compliance. In Badakhshan province, violations could result in a six-month jail sentence. This latest measure reflects the Taliban’s ongoing implementation of strict Islamic law since regaining power, following previous restrictions on internet access which were briefly reversed due to widespread disruption. The ban aims to further control communication and information within the government apparatus.
