A new study examines how Taiwanese gay men are overcoming legal obstacles to become fathers through cross-border reproductive technologies. The research, led by Jung Chen, introduces the concept of “affective relatedness” to explain the powerful emotional forces driving these men’s pursuit of parenthood. Hope and a desire for belonging are identified as central to their decisions. The framework highlights not only the emotional connections formed by the aspiring fathers with their future children, but also those developed between the researcher and research participants. Chen’s work sheds light on the complexities of queer family formation in a challenging legal landscape. This research provides insight into the emotional landscape of alternative routes to fatherhood and the importance of recognizing these motivations.
