Following recent heavy rains and subsequent flooding across Sénégal, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye convened a meeting with relevant ministers at the Presidential Palace to address the damage. He expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and pledged solidarity with affected populations, requesting increased logistical and health support for those impacted and efforts to clear flooded areas. President Faye is prioritizing an accelerated reform of Sénégal's drainage policies, initiating a technical audit of existing systems’ failures. He directed the Prime Minister to update master plans for urban drainage and validate the national strategy for flood prevention and disaster management. Additionally, the finalization of a national civil protection and disaster risk management strategy is expected by the end of November 2026, alongside exploring the establishment of a national drainage fund. The overarching goal is to proactively anticipate disasters and prioritize investment in improved sanitation infrastructure across Sénégal.
