A 72-year-old Sydney man has been released on bail after being arrested for numerous graffiti and property damage incidents in the inner west. The judge overseeing the case voiced surprise that the accused was not charged under New South Wales hate speech legislation, given the nature of the alleged offences described as “offensive”. Dozens of incidents are attributed to the man, but details regarding the content of the graffiti have not been released. He has been granted bail on the condition he resides with a local church minister. The case has prompted questions about the application of hate speech laws in relation to vandalism and public displays. Further legal proceedings are expected. Authorities are continuing to investigate the full extent of the alleged damage.
