A 35-year-old woman is in critical condition after being attacked by a shark while swimming off Coogee Beach in Sydney, Australia. The incident occurred Saturday morning, approximately 30 meters from the shore, prompting a swift response from emergency services. Witnesses reported seeing a large amount of blood in the water before lifeguards rescued the woman, who sustained severe injuries to her arm and leg. Authorities have closed Coogee Beach, along with neighboring Bondi, Bronte, Clovelly, and Tamarama Beaches, for at least 24 hours as a safety precaution. The attack follows a period of increased shark activity along Australia’s east coast, including fatal incidents earlier this year linked to recent heavy rainfall and reduced water visibility. Experts suggest murky water attracts sharks by providing cover for ambushing prey, and runoff from heavy rains may also contribute to shark presence. The victim was airlifted to a hospital and was reportedly conscious but in a serious condition.
