Swiss voters have decisively rejected a proposal to limit the country’s population to 10 million by 2050. The referendum, spearheaded by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party, failed to gain majority support, with 54.8% voting against the initiative on Sunday. A majority of Switzerland’s cantons also opposed the cap. This marks the latest defeat for the party’s efforts to significantly curb immigration levels. Opponents of the cap argued it would harm the Swiss economy and create labor shortages. The result indicates continued support for current immigration policies within the country, despite ongoing debates surrounding population growth and integration. This is not the first time such a proposal has been put to a vote and rejected by Swiss citizens.
