A new report from experts at ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute concludes Switzerland can successfully transition to a sustainable energy system without building new nuclear power plants. The study, conducted by 19 energy specialists, suggests a reliance on existing hydropower and expanding solar energy production is viable. Supplementing this with wind power and enhanced electricity storage capabilities would ensure a reliable energy supply. This finding challenges the notion that nuclear energy is essential for Switzerland’s future energy independence. The report indicates a cost-effective and feasible pathway focused on renewable resources. This research offers a potential alternative to ongoing debates surrounding nuclear power in the country. Ultimately, the experts believe a focus on innovation and expansion of existing renewable infrastructure is the most practical solution.
