Rising temperatures and thawing permafrost are jeopardizing the structural integrity of Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) mountain huts. The SAC, which manages 153 huts nationwide, reports that foundations of numerous refuges are at risk. Approximately one-third of these huts are situated in areas susceptible to permafrost degradation. This poses a significant threat to a vital part of Swiss culture and tourism, as the huts provide accommodation and support for hikers and climbers. The SAC is currently assessing the extent of the damage and exploring potential mitigation strategies, including costly reinforcement or relocation. The long-term viability of these iconic structures is increasingly uncertain without substantial intervention to address the effects of climate change. This situation highlights the tangible impact of a warming climate on Switzerland’s alpine landscape and infrastructure.
