The Helsingborg Detention Centre in Sweden is preparing to house individuals as young as 13 and 14 years old, despite recent discussion regarding raising the age of criminal responsibility. The facility is one of three nationwide making preparations for this possibility. A recent announcement from Justice Minister Gunnar Strömer has not altered these preparations. Mirja, acting head of correctional services at the facility, stated that all individuals under the age of 18 are considered children by the staff. This indicates the detention centre intends to approach the care and custody of these young offenders with a focus on their status as minors. The centre’s preparations suggest an expectation that the current legal framework, allowing for the detention of young teenagers, will remain in place. The focus remains on providing appropriate care within a correctional setting.
