A 61-year-old Swedish man has been sentenced to four years and five months in prison for compelling his wife into online prostitution. He was convicted of attempted rape, abuse, and threats, and ordered to pay 200,000 Swedish krona in damages – approximately €26,700 – to his wife. The court found he used threats and surveillance cameras to control her in their remote, eastern Sweden home. While the man claimed he was helping his wife fulfill a desire for a life as a high-end escort, the judge ruled he initiated and managed the operation, describing it as “ruthless exploitation.” The court couldn’t establish non-consensual sex in all instances due to limited evidence from chat logs and the wife’s inability to testify. Authorities identified 120 men who paid for sex with the woman, and 28 have been convicted as a result of the investigation, which began after the wife filed a report in October of last year. The abuse reportedly began in 2022.
