Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia will mark their 50th wedding anniversary on June 19th. The royal couple’s romance began in 1972 at the Summer Olympics in Munich. At the time, Carl Gustaf was a 26-year-old crown prince attending the games as a spectator. Queen Silvia, then known as Silvia Sommerlath, was working as a hostess for the organizing committee. Their initial meeting was reportedly love at first sight. The couple maintained their relationship discreetly with the help of Queen Silvia’s sister, before marrying in 1976.
