A new study analyzing three Byzantine shipwrecks discovered off the coast of Turkey is shedding light on medieval maritime trade routes. The research, published in *Heritage*, focuses on vessels found near the ancient city of Knidos, revealing connections between the Aegean Sea, Anatolia, the Black Sea, and the eastern Mediterranean. Analysis of the shipwrecks and their cargo provides insights into the goods transported during the Byzantine era and the extent of the empire’s commercial reach. Researchers believe these findings will help reconstruct previously unknown aspects of medieval trade practices and seafaring. The deep-water wrecks offer a rare opportunity to study well-preserved artifacts outside of typical archaeological contexts. This discovery contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the Byzantine economy and its maritime infrastructure.
