A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck northern Japan at approximately 7:30 AM local time on February 25th. The earthquake registered a 6-strong intensity on the Japanese seismic scale in Aomori Prefecture’s Kamikita district. A 5-strong intensity was recorded in the northern coastal and inland areas of Iwate Prefecture. Shaking of 5-weak intensity was felt in northern Miyagi Prefecture, while a 4 intensity was observed across a wider region including Hokkaido and parts of Tohoku. Numerous other prefectures experienced a 3 intensity or lower. Authorities are currently assessing the damage and have issued a tsunami advisory for coastal areas, urging residents to evacuate. Residents are advised to stay informed and prepared for potential aftershocks.
